The great skate debate or why are skateboarders to get special treatment?

The skate debate over the proposed second skate park for Coffs Harbour raises many so far unanswered questions.

Firstly why the campaign of deception, the articles and letters published in local press stating that Coffs Harbour doesn’t have a skate park, while Toormina and Woolgoolga do. In fact Coffs Harbour has a well-utilised skate park, built many years ago located in Bray Street, right across from the high school.

Other community groups around Australia including specialised sporting facilities, rifle/pistol range, model airfield, Bmx track, go cart track, scout hall or miniature railway all have to take responsibility for their activity. Many have to buy or lease the land on which they operate. To be given community credibility and acceptance, skaters must step up to the task and agree that with their “rights” also come responsibilities.

Firstly skaters need to form some sort of club structure and then become an incorporated body. They can then raise funds, hold raffles, sausage sizzles etc and be eligible to apply for grants to offset the cost to the community of their activity.
They also must take out their own insurance just as any other community group does now as well as maintaining their facility and being responsible for safety of users and members of the public.

If a new facility is built, what happens if a user is injured? Who accepts responsibility? Will it be open 24 hours? Who will supervise activities and oversee safety? Will users be charged, like ratepayers are charged to use the Council swimming pool and showground facilities? How much will it cost?

Who will pay to maintain the facility, and regularly clean up the graffiti? Yes, every skate facility is scarred with this unsightly anti social blight. Do we really want constant rampant graffiti in our showpiece Brelsford Park? The Bray street facility, even though it is in the heart of a well run community “youth centre” has graffiti problems. You would think that skaters would take great pride in their facility and want to keep it spotlessly maintained.

Why not improve on the Bray Street facility which many would agree is the best place for it? Skaters interviewed whilst photographing the Bray St facility, said it was good for beginners and medium level skaters but a more advanced facility was needed. Very well, build it at Bray street. They also expressed the view that once the “new” park is built, the existing one will be closed and demolished for extensions to the basketball stadium. Is this the real agenda behind the push? Getting rid of the skaters and the associated graffiti to Brelsford Park, along with the insurance, safety and litigation issues. The photographer saw unsupervised skaters using the facility without any form of safety apparel, one of whom totally lost control and fell. It is only a matter of time before a skater suffers severe injury and the skate park owner is sued.

Skate Park Construction But Its Not In Coffs Harbour As Yet
I filmed this skate park being constructed in a tiny little town called Walpole in Western Australia while I was there filming Australian Pictorials - www.australianpictorials.com  But where and when will ours start I wonder? Was it all talk? Cr Rhoades stated there was 1.5 million available and it could start tomorrow if approved and it was approved. The Mayor stated plans like this were to be fund ready beforehand? Well the funds were there so one can only assume the plans were ready? But the skate park still hasn't been started after many months of  speculation. Was it all another con job? What ever happened to the Jetty upgrade? Another fairytale from the Mayor?
